High‐Impact PLA in Compatibilized PLA/PCL Blends: Optimization of Blend Composition and Type and Content of Compatibilizer

Abstract In this work, the effectiveness of seven commercial compatibilizers is tested in polylactide (PLA)/poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) blends with different compositions to obtain a high‐impact PLA. None effective for 90/10 and 80/20 PLA/PCL compositions, as no improvement impact strength observed. For 70/30 composition, having glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) acrylate groups their structure are proved most effective, morphological change towards co‐continuity induced by them leads significant improvements (of ≈345% 90% respect neat PLA noncompatibilized blend, respectively). The it shows best balance properties, compatibilizer (ElvaloyPTW) chosen carry out optimization content. It found that adding 6 phr blend results highly toughened ductile while maintaining high modulus yield values. Larger contents lead even higher values, but low‐strain mechanical properties notably reduced. Thus, simple easily scalable method produce shown, implies compounding three commercially available components without involving any toxic solvents.
